Coastal Protection at the Albanian Mediterranean Coast

Project description:

The beach at the Albanian Mediterranean Coast close to Durrës erodes continuously. The coast line moves several meters per year inland. Due to the erosion the value of land properties is significantly reduced. HPC was requested to coordinate adjusted coastal protection measures to stop the ongoing erosion and to initiate an aggradation of sand, if possible. Two barriers (including geotextile, riprap and rock surface reinforcement) were designed and constructed. Their effect on coastline and bathymetry was topographically surveyed. A few months later significant aggradation of sand has already taken place.
